Speak served in\u00a0Company K, 357th Infantry<\/strong>, part of the\u00a090th Division<\/strong>, known as the \u201cTough \u2019Ombres.\u201d The 90th Division fought in some of the most grueling battles of the Meuse\u2011Argonne Offensive, the final and deadliest campaign of World War I.<\/p>\n On\u00a0October 24, 1918<\/strong>, just eighteen days before the Armistice, Sgt. Speak was killed in action.<\/p>\n The timing alone tells a story \u2014 one of relentless fighting, of a division pushing through fortified German lines, of young men who believed the end was near but still faced the full brutality of war. The 90th Division suffered heavy casualties in those final weeks, fighting through forests, ravines, and machine\u2011gun nests that had resisted Allied forces for years.<\/p>\n We don\u2019t know Sgt. Speak\u2019s age.<\/p>\n We don\u2019t know his letters home.<\/p>\n We don\u2019t know the dreams he carried into uniform.<\/p>\n But we know this:<\/p>\n He fought in one of the most decisive battles of the war.<\/p>\n He served in a division known for its grit and endurance.<\/p>\n He died in the final push toward peace.<\/p>\n His name, carved into stone more than a century ago, stands as a reminder that victory often comes at the cost of lives that never got to see it.
