CPL Pat Tillman

U.S. Army Rangers
1976 – 2004

Patrick Daniel Tillman was born on November 6, 1976, in San Jose, California, the eldest of three brothers. A natural leader and fierce competitor, he carried his sense of loyalty from the football field to the battlefield.

Tillman earned a scholarship to Arizona State University, where he excelled both academically and athletically — graduating summa cum laude in marketing while leading the Sun Devils to the 1997 Rose Bowl. Drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in 1998, he quickly became a starting safety and set franchise records for tackles.

After the attacks of September 11, 2001, Tillman turned down a multimillion‑dollar NFL contract to enlist in the U.S. Army alongside his brother Kevin. He completed infantry and airborne training at Fort Benning, Georgia, and earned his Ranger Tab in 2003. Assigned to Company A, 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, he served tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

On April 22, 2004, during operations near Sperah, Afghanistan, Tillman was killed in a friendly‑fire incident. He was posthumously promoted to Corporal and awarded the Silver Star, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal.

His legacy endures through the Pat Tillman Foundation, which supports scholars and leaders committed to service beyond self.

“Somewhere inside, we hear a voice. It leads us in the direction of the person we wish to become.” — Pat Tillman
