On March 28, 2026, Deputy Vargas collapsed during the Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay, a 120-mile law enforcement race through the desert. Despite immediate medical attention and transport to a Las Vegas hospital, he passed away later that day. His death marked the first in the race’s 40-year history, a solemn reminder of the physical and emotional toll borne by those who serve.

Deputy Vargas was 30 years old. He is survived by his wife, parents, siblings, and extended family. Colleagues remember him as a dedicated public servant, a loyal teammate, and a man of quiet strength.
