A Life of Courage and Character<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Staff Sergeant Travis W. Atkins served with the 10th Mountain Division, leading his soldiers with steadiness, instinct, and a deep sense of responsibility. At 31, he was the kind of leader others trusted without hesitation \u2014 calm under pressure, protective by nature, and committed to the men beside him.<\/p>\n

He deployed to Iraq during a period of intense insurgent activity, where every patrol carried risk and every decision carried weight. Travis met those challenges with quiet resolve and unwavering professionalism.<\/p>\n

His Final Act of Valor<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On June 1, 2007, during a route security mission in Abu Samak, Iraq, Travis confronted a man wearing an explosive vest. In the seconds that followed, he made a choice that would define his legacy.<\/p>\n

He shielded his soldiers with his own body.<\/p>\n

The blast took his life, but his actions saved the lives of the men behind him. For this extraordinary courage, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor<\/strong> \u2014 a recognition of the selflessness he lived every day in uniform.<\/p>\n
