Before she was Queen, Elizabeth Windsor was a young woman who stepped forward during Britain\u2019s darkest hour. In 1945, at just eighteen, she joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service<\/strong>, becoming the first female member of the Royal Family to serve in the armed forces.<\/p>\n

She trained as a mechanic and military driver<\/strong>, learning to service engines, drive heavy vehicles, and work alongside other women who were supporting the war effort. Those who served with her remembered her willingness to get her hands dirty, her curiosity, and her refusal to accept special treatment. She wore the same uniform, studied the same manuals, and earned her promotion to Junior Commander<\/strong> through merit.<\/p>\n
